Operation Broken Loan (Detroit)
In an undercover operation which was launched to target 5 criminal mortgage fraud organizations on 10.18.2005, resulted in execution of 7 search warrants, 18 arrest warrants, 8 seizure warrants for subject’s bank accounts & 2 vehicle seizures.
There were several mortgage brokers among those charged in Detroit metropolitan area. They allegedly defrauded lenders by straw purchases & inflating appraisals. Subjects were charged with violation of sections 1343 (wire fraud), and 1344 (bank fraud) of United States Code, Title 18.
On 10/06/2005, 6 individuals got indicted & 6 complaints were filed. On 10/07/2005, again 7 complaints were filed against subjects and on 10/13/2005; one additional complaint filing took place.
This operation was started to target widespread mortgage fraud in Detroit metropolitan area. Title III was successfully utilized in investigations & controlled purchase of real estate were made.
In the investigation it was revealed that dishonest brokers created fraudulent W-2s, employment verifications & paycheck stubs for getting straw buyers qualified for purchases. Lenders who were victims of the fraud, relied on borrower certification and inflated appraisals arranged by subjects.
