Dream Town Lists Chicago Home that Runs on Solar Power
Dream Town Realty was selected as the listing brokerage for a 4,250 sq. ft. house in Chicago’s East Village neighborhood that has one of the largest residential solar energy generating systems in the city. According to the current homeowners, on a normal, sunny day the system produces more electricity than the house needs and it sells the leftover energy back to ComEd.
The huge, 36-panel solar power system was installed in 2010 (at the time it was the biggest system of its kind for a Chicago residence). The 280 Watt panels are controlled by a computerized performance management center that monitors and optimizes the output of each individual panel. In addition to generating solar energy, the house has several other eco-friendly features—such as an electric car charging station in its 2.5-car garage and a high-efficiency mini-therm boiler, which is a green alternative to the traditional hot water heater.
The home is located at 1459 W. Walton in Chicago’s East Village neighborhood (just south of Wicker Park). It went on the market earlier this month for $1.19 million. The floor plan includes 4 bedrooms, 3.1 bathrooms, an exercise room, wine cellar, sauna and 4 outdoor spaces (including a rooftop deck). The solar panels are affixed to the house in a series of rows along the roof, garage and breezeway that connects the two structures.
The general public will be able to visit this solar-powered Chicago homes on Saturday, October 1st during the 2011 Illinois Solar Tour. It is one of the stops on the annual statewide, self-guided tour that celebrates green building practices in local homes and businesses. It will also be a part of the upcoming “Neighborhoods Go Green!” exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Foundation in November. The show will be open daily in the Lecture Hall of the foundation’s downtown location at 224 S. Michigan Avenue.
